We also heard a rumor about a new internal project, codename Strawberry. This is anticipated to be the long-sought-after planning feature for one-shot autoregressive models like LLMs. Coincidentally, we got Structured Outputs for OpenAI’s API, which helps reduce hallucinations and wandering minds. Also, this week, we learned of Goliath’s new AI-ready IoT solution. Imagine these language models having access to IoT devices like kitchen appliances, street signs, thermostats, and weather stations.
Kicking off this week’s AI news, Cohere co-founder Nick Frosst offered a sobering reminder that while AI’s capabilities continue to grow, we must remain realistic about its limitations. Frosst argues that although AI is making significant strides, it’s far from becoming the “digital gods” that some imagine.
Adding to the discourse on AI’s influence, CrowdStrike revealed the cause behind last month’s global Microsoft outage—a software glitch in its Falcon sensor. This is a reminder that advanced technologies have severe consequences, especially as these tools become critical infrastructure.
Meanwhile, a new study by Google Cloud and the National Research Group showcased the power and promise of generative AI. The research highlights the significant return on investment for early adopters of generative AI, showing how this technology is not just a fad but a transformative force. However, as promising as these developments are, they risk automating away seemingly simple things, like note-taking, which humans need to organize, reflect, and learn.

In AI hardware news, the industry saw a significant boost, with Groq securing $640 million in a funding round led by BlackRock. This investment signals confidence in Groq’s potential to challenge established players like Nvidia and highlights the growing importance of specialized AI chips in powering the next generation of AI.
In education, the integration of generative AI is reshaping how students and educators interact with learning materials. A recent report highlights that Gen Z students are increasingly turning to tools like ChatGPT for academic assistance, with a notable 10% using it multiple times daily. This trend is not just about convenience; it’s fundamentally altering the approach to learning and assessment. For instance, AI-created quizzes are emerging as a tool that saves teachers’ time and enhances student achievement through frequent, low-stakes assessments. Meanwhile, Amazon’s Trusted AI Challenge pushes for secure and responsible AI innovation, particularly in higher education.
Shifting to the political arena, OpenAI’s GPT-4o model has been flagged for its potential to sway political opinions amongst its four-fold increase in use since 2023. This comes as the U.S. government is preparing to propose a ban on Chinese software in autonomous vehicles, reflecting growing concerns over digital sovereignty and national security. These developments are part of a broader narrative in which governments grapple with AI’s double-edged sword: its immense potential for progress and its capacity to disrupt.
In the business world, ethical considerations are taking center stage. A Deloitte study reveals that C-level executives prioritize ethics in AI implementation, emphasizing a human-first approach that seeks to empower rather than replace the workforce. However, not all news is positive—Intel’s decision to cut 18,000 jobs following a disappointing earnings report has sent shockwaves through the tech industry, highlighting the economic challenges even tech giants face in a rapidly changing environment. Additionally, Gartner’s warning about slower-than-expected IT spending growth is partly due to refocused resources to support AI initiatives.
In robotics, the introduction of WorkFar’s sentient humanoid robots into the workforce represents a significant leap forward in automation, raising questions about the future of human labor—meanwhile, advancements in robotic skills, such as a new robotic hand that can mimic human motion.
